The Academy of Model Aeronatics sanctioned Georgia Model Aviators or GMA host the Lockheed Martin / SAE Aero Design 2012 competition April 27, 28, 29, 2012.

This is an aircraft research, design, build, defend and fly competition between international collegiate teams. Canada, China, Poland, India, Venezuela, Brazil, Turkey, and the USA will be represented. World class organizations will participate and include Lockheed Martin, SAE International, Autodesk, & FAI Materials.

The Aero Design® Competition challenges engineering students to conceive, design, fabricate and present a radio controlled aircraft that can take off and land while carrying the maximum cargo. The students follow a design process much like what is used in the engineering industry.

Teams and their advisers arrive with carefully written papers to present and aircraft carefully boxed for safe keeping. Industry experts hear the papers presented, the aircraft pass careful inspection and final preparations are made.

First flights, then additional flights adding weight prove design theories or crashes occur. Flight becomes more challenging as each gram is added.

Who has the best design, the best team, and the greatest luck to grab bragging rights this year?

About the Collegiate Design Series: Aero Design

Here are a few quick facts:

1) There are three classes of team competition:
Regular Class - proving fundamental understanding of flight.
Micro Class - is all electric and requires trade-off between carrying the highest payload fraction possible at the lowest empty weight possible.
Advanced Class - requires teams to integrate aeronautical, mechanical, electrical, computer sciences and  engineering disciplines.

2) Broken aircraft can be repaired for teams to advance in the competition, in fact, this is encouraged.

3) This is the 26th year of the Aero Design competition
-----

Here are some inside hints on what to look for:

1) Teams on the runway...it is their turn to prove their aircraft can take off from the runway, fly one lap, then land in one piece.  Nothing call fall off.

2) Unique and clever designs...every aircraft conforms to certain specifications and all had to pass the same technical inspection, but none of them look similar.

3) Giant wingspan aircraft...The Advance Class teams are allowed multiple engines and landing gear must have brakes to stop rolling. The team from China has submitted plans for a 17 foot wingspan aircraft.

Ken Blackwell
"I am a High School Educator, I have been modeling since age six. I have experience with most aircraft types from war birds to large scale aircraft. In recent years my focus has been on large scale aircraft competing in IMAC in the Sportsman Class with a 42% Extra. I have served as a safety officer for Cobb County R/C. I am also a  Competition Facilitator for Skills USA."

Pedro Sanchez
"My name is Pedro Sanchez, I live in Atlanta, GA. I have been flying radio control model airplanes for nine years. I have built all my airplanes for the last seven years. Most of my airplanes are scratch built. I like a challenge and lots of those little details because it adds realism to my airplanes and makes them original.

Last year I was invited for the first time to Top Gun, where I competed and end up in Fifth  Place . This year I was invited again.   I love aviation, especially warbirds. Thanks

"This will be my 4th SAE competition as a Pilot.  I have flown for many different schools in all three classes from all over world. I was the pilot for the winning Minnesota Micro class entry (see picture-I am the big guy on the end).

I am a member at the GMA club and know the field well.   I fly a 124" Extra 300 in competition aerobatics.  I have won 10 IMAC competitions over the past 4 years. I also have a 131" Super Flying King which drops RC Parachuters. My cell phone is: 404-392-4621"

Rex Briant
"I’ve been in the RC hobby for ten years.  I’ve visited all facets of RC, spending most of my  time in, IMAC, scale warbirds and turbine powered Jets.  In recent years, I’ve focused most of his building and flying on Giant Scale Turbine Military Jets.

During this time, I’ve served on the Board of GMA for 5 years and am the current President of the 300 member club.  Working with the industry, I’ve been a factory pilot for Fly Eagle Jets, Details4Scale and Matrix Gear Systems, working with these companies on prototype design and first generation production quality control.

Eduardo Voloch
"I’ve been flying Radio Control planes for about 12 years. I’m a member of the U.S. Army Georgia National Guard, and I’m on the OCS program. I’m a Computer Science Student at Kennesaw State University and I’m also a full scale private pilot. I fly the Cessna 172 and am working towards becoming a commercial pilot.

This will be my 3rd participation as a team pilot on the official SAE East Heavy Lift Contest. In 2011, I was selected to fly for 12 teams, and obtained several records, such as 2nds and 3rds places for several teams and most consecutive & successful flights.

If you are interested, please confirm with me as soon as possible as I would like to start corresponding with each team and pre-inspect your aircraft (upon your arrival - for CG, flight control throws, overall set up, etc…) and also to test flight, trimming, engine tune-up. I will do my best and use my top skills to help you winning."

Henry Masopust
"Started flying in 1984 with a Goldberg Electra kit converted to a .15 glow engine. Electrics were too heavy back in the brushed motors and nicad battery days. Taught myself to fly with it on a vacant lot. Moved up to .60 and .90 sized ARF's. Started flying electrics when lithium poly batteries were available. Started out with foamies then park fliers and then a 6 ft. Telemaster Electro. Was requested to fly the SAE competition for an India team and won third place for them. They have had me fly for them two more times and have contacted me for the current SAE at GMA".
